In my Functional Medicine practice in Bloomington Illinois, I take a different approach to the treatment and prevention of severe headaches and migraines. WHAT ARE MIGRAINES?
The migraine is perhaps the best known special type of headache. It is actually called the migraine syndrome. By syndrome we mean that a lot of other symptoms accompany the headache – all of them bad. Symptoms include dizziness, light sensitivity, “spots” before the eyes, redness, swelling, tearing of the eyes, muscle contraction, irritability, heart palpitation, excessive sweating, nausea, vomiting, constipation, or diarrhea. These symptoms often arise before the headache hits. The headache itself may last for a few minutes to a few days, and the severity may range from minor discomfort to immobilizing agony. The migraine pain is most common in the temple, but it may be experienced anywhere in the head, face and neck.
Closely related to the migraine, is the cluster headache. Attacks come on abruptly with intense, throbbing pain arising high in the nostril and spreading to the area behind the eye on the same side. Sometimes, the forehead is also affected. The attacks tend to occur from once to several times daily in clusters lasting weeks, or even months. Without apparent reason, the cluster subsides as quickly as it began.
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF MIGRAINE AND CLUSTER HEADACHES?
When the upper part of your brainstem over- fires or becomes hyperactive, it causes blood vessels in the head to contract and later expand. This is what causes the headache, as well as the other related symptoms mentioned above. But, what causes the brainstem to over- fire? Many triggers exist, ranging from neurological weaknesses in the brain to metabolic problems like hidden infections, nutritional deficiencies, and chemical toxicity. With functional neurological and laboratory testing, we can pinpoint the exact cause, correct it, and give you back your life!
